Marcel Schrötter war auch am Sonntag auf Phillip Island in Topform. Im Ziel fehlten ihm nur zwei Zehntel zu seinem ersten Sieg als Supersport-WM-Fahrer.

Dieser herrliche Sommersonntag im Süden Australiens wird allen Teams und Fahrern noch eine Weile in Erinnerung bleiben, denn es war ein ereignisreicher Tag, auch wenn es am Nachmittag eine lange Wartezeit gab. Nach einem Unfall in einem Rahmenrennen musste die Strecke gereinigt werden, was gut zwei Stunden dauerte.

Die Teams und Fahrer der Supersport-Klasse waren von dieser ungeplanten Wartezeit am stärksten betroffen, denn ihr zweites Rennen des Wochenendes stand als nächstes auf dem Programm. Nach mehr als zwei Stunden entschied die Rennleitung, die Distanz auf neun Runden zu verkürzen und auf den obligatorischen Boxenstopp für einen Reifenwechsel zu verzichten.

Marcel Schrötter erwischte als Zweiter aus der ersten Reihe einen guten Start, konnte sich aber nicht sofort an das Hinterrad von Samstagssieger Yari Montella hängen. Erst im weiteren Verlauf des Rennens wurde Schrötter immer stärker und verringerte den Rückstand gegenüber dem Italiener kontinuierlich auf wenige Zehntelsekunden. Der 31-Jährige Schrötter fuhr auch die schnellste Runde des Rennens. In der letzten Runde gab der MV Agusta-Pilot noch einmal alles, doch es reichte nicht ganz, um Montella bis zur Ziellinie abzufangen.

Die zweite Veranstaltung der FIM Supersport World Championship 2024 findet in einem Monat auf dem Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya im Nordosten Spaniens statt.

"Ich bin mega-happy mit diesem Start in die Meisterschaft. Die harte Arbeit über die Wintermonate macht sich bezahlt. Dann haben wir die lange Reise hierher nach Australien gemacht und gleich am ersten Rennwochenende zwei Podiumsplätze eingefahren. Darauf können wir schon ein bisschen stolz sein. Aber das heutige Rennen hat gezeigt, dass wir noch ein bisschen mehr brauchen. Vor allem in den ersten Runden müssen wir uns etwas einfallen lassen, da ist uns Montella heute wieder weggefahren. Ansonsten sind wir gut mit der allgemeinen Situation zurechtgekommen. Damit meine ich das lange Warten. Es war nicht einfach, zwei Stunden lang herumzusitzen und abzuwarten, was passiert."

"Um ehrlich zu sein, hatte ich schon mit dem Tag abgeschlossen, dass noch gefahren wird. Dann mussten wir uns auf ein Sprintrennen vorbereiten, bei dem jede Runde wie ein Qualifying gefahren wird. Am Anfang war ich nicht schnell genug, aber dann konnte ich gut mithalten. Vor allem in den letzten Runden war ich schneller als Montella und die Fahrer hinter mir. Ich würde nicht sagen, dass eine Runde mehr für den Sieg gereicht hätte, aber ich wäre auf jeden Fall in Schlagdistanz gewesen. Wir konnten mit den Reifen besser umgehen als andere."

EN: Strong start to the season topped with second place

Marcel Schrötter also showed up performing impressively on Sunday at Phillip Island. At the finish, he was just two tenths short of his first victory as a Supersport World Championship rider.

This glorious late-summer Sunday in the south of Australia will be remembered by all teams and riders for a while, because it was an eventful day, even if there was a long wait in the afternoon. After an accident in a support race, the track had to be cleaned, which took a good two hours.

Teams and riders in the Supersport class were the most affected by this unplanned waiting time, as their second race of the weekend was next on the program. After more than two hours, race control decided to shorten the distance to nine laps and dispense with the mandatory pit stop for a tire change.

Marcel Schrötter got off to a good start from the front row in second place but was unable to immediately catch the rear wheel of Saturday's winner Yari Montella. It was only as the race progressed that Schrötter got stronger and stronger and continuously reduced the gap to the Italian rider to a few tenths of a second. Ino doing so, the 31-year-old from Bavaria also set the fastest lap of the race. On the final lap, the MV Agusta rider gave it his all once again, but it was not quite enough to catch Montella by the finish line.

The second event of the 2024 FIM Supersport World Championship will take place in a month's time at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in the northeast of Spain.

"I am mega-happy with this start to the championship. The hard work over the winter months is paying off. Then we made the long journey here to Australia and clinched two podium finishes on the very first race weekend. We can be a bit proud of that. But today's race showed that we still need a bit more. We need to come up with something, especially in the first few laps, as Montella pulled away from us again today. Apart from that, we coped well with the general situation. By that I mean the long wait. It was not easy to sit around for two hours and wait to see what would happen."

"To be honest, I had already concluded the day that we would not still be racing. Then we had to prepare for a sprint race, where every lap is like qualifying. I was not fast enough at the start, but then I was able to keep up well. Especially in the last laps I was faster than Montella and the riders behind me. I would not say that one more lap would have been enough for the win, but I would definitely have been within striking distance. We were able to handle the tires better than others."
