Für den 32-jährigen Deutschen gestaltete sich der Start in das zweite Rennwochenende auf der Achterbahnstrecke von Portimao schwieriger als erwartet. Dennoch ist er der beste Ducati-Pilot in der Startaufstellung.

Seit dem Start der FIM Supersport World Championship 2025 im Süden Australiens Ende Februar sind fünf Wochen vergangen, in denen Fahrer und Teams auf die Probe gestellt wurden. Das Autódromo Intenacional do Algarve im Hinterland der portugiesischen Hafenstadt Portimao ist an diesem Wochenende Schauplatz der zweiten Runde der seriennahen Meisterschaft. Die 4,5 Kilometer lange Strecke gilt auch als eine der selektivsten im Kalender.

Das freie Training am Freitagmorgen war ein hartes Pflaster für Marcel Schrötter, der die lange rennfreie Zeit nur mühsam überwand. Der Ducati-Pilot aus dem Prager Team WRP ging schliesslich kurz nach Mittag als Siebter der freien Session in die entscheidende Superpole, in der die Startaufstellung für das erste Rennen des Wochenendes festgelegt wurde. Auch Schrötter brauchte in dieser Session eine Weile, um in Fahrt zu kommen. Er beendete seine Zeitenjagd auf dem siebten Platz, was ihm einen Startplatz in der dritten Reihe einbrachte.

Aufgrund der Terminüberschneidung mit dem Grand Prix auf dem Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, wurde die Startzeit für die Supersport-Rennen am Samstag und Sonntag auf kurz nach 12 Uhr Ortszeit verlegt. Exakt heisst das 13:35 Uhr MEZ.

«Insgesamt war es nicht der einfachste Tag für uns, denn vor allem ich hatte heute Morgen mehr zu kämpfen als erwartet. Hauptsächlich lag es daran, weil ich in der langen Pause kein Strassenmotorrad gefahren war. Portimao ist ausserdem eine schwierige und körperlich anspruchsvolle Strecke. Daher fühlte ich mich wie an einem ersten Testtag zu Beginn des Jahres, und es war schwierig für mich, wieder in den Rhythmus zu kommen und ein Gefühl für das Motorrad und alles andere zu entwickeln. Hinzu kam der seit letztem Jahr gültige Zeitplan eines Rennwochenendes mit nur einem freien Training, bevor es direkt in die Superpole geht, so dass ich im Vergleich zu einigen Fahrern und Teams, die vor zwei Wochen zum Testen hier waren, etwas mehr Streckenzeit gebraucht hätte. Es war also nicht einfach, gleich von Anfang an dabei zu sein. Trotzdem hatte ich mir für die Superpole ein bisschen mehr erwartet. Doch am Nachmittag hatte ich auch noch Probleme, vor allem in der ersten Hälfte der Session. Auch wenn ich gepusht und alles versucht habe, war es schwierig, mich zu verbessern.»

«Als ich nach dem ersten Run an die Box kam, habe ich versucht, ruhig zu bleiben und optimal mit Bela, meinem Crew-Chief, zusammenzuarbeiten. Ich habe mich auch auf mich selbst konzentriert und nicht den Glauben verloren, dass ich es schaffen kann. Das hat ganz gut funktioniert, denn ich konnte die Situation ein wenig drehen, auch wenn P7 natürlich immer noch nicht das ist, was wir wollen, denn wir wollen um das Podium kämpfen. Aber es ist auch keine Katastrophe, wenn man bedenkt, dass wir am Anfang zu kämpfen hatten. Andererseits sind wir die beste Ducati in der Startaufstellung. Es sieht so aus, als ob Ducati im Vergleich zu anderen Herstellern etwas mehr zu kämpfen hat, denn es scheint, dass sie sich dieses Jahr verbessert haben und etwas stärker sind. Aber das ist etwas, woran wir hart arbeiten. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass uns noch etwas am Motorrad fehlt, zum Beispiel in Bezug auf die Dämpfung, ein etwas besseres Gefühl, aber auch ein bisschen mehr Leistung. Das sind ein paar Punkte, an denen wir arbeiten. Mein Team tut auch alles, was möglich ist, und hoffentlich können wir uns bald verbessern. Aber so ist die Situation, und ich denke, wir machen mit dem, was wir haben, einen guten Job. Es war erst der erste Tag hier und wir hatten ein wenig zu kämpfen, aber die Position ist keine Katastrophe für das erste Rennen des Wochenendes am Samstag.»

For the experienced 32-year-old German rider, the start to the second race weekend at the rollercoaster track in Portimao turned out to be more difficult than expected. Nevertheless, he is the best Ducati rider on the grid.

Since the start of the FIM Supersport World Championship 2025 in the south of Australia at the end of February, five weeks have passed in which riders and teams have been put to the test. Free practice on Friday morning was a tough one for Marcel Schrötter, who struggled to overcome the long race-free period. The Ducati rider from the Prague-based Team WRP finally went into the decisive Superpole, in which the starting grid for the first race of the weekend was determined, shortly after midday in seventh place after FP. Schrötter also took a while to get going in this session though, he finished his time attack in seventh place, which earned him a grid position on the third row.

Due to the clash of dates with the Grand Prix at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, starting time for the Supersport races on Saturday and Sunday has been moved to shortly after 12 noon local time. To be precise, this means 13:35 CET.

«Overall, it was not the easiest day for us, because I in particular struggled more than expected this morning. This was mainly because I had not ridden a road bike during the long break. In addition, Portimao is also a difficult and physically demanding track. Therefore, I felt like I was on a first day of testing at the beginning of the year and it was difficult for me to get back into the rhythm and find a feeling for the bike and everything else. On top of that, since last year's race weekend schedule with only one free practice session before going straight into Superpole, I would have needed a bit more track time compared to some of the riders and teams who were here for testing two weeks ago. So, it was not easy to be there right from the start. Nevertheless, I had expected a bit more for the Superpole. But I still had problems in the afternoon, especially in the first half of the session. Even though I pushed and tried everything, it was difficult to improve.»

«When I came into the pits after the first run, I tried to stay calm and work together with Bela, my crew chief, in the best possible way. I also concentrated on myself and did not lose faith that I could do it. That worked quite well, because I was able to turn the situation around a bit, even though P7 is still not what we want, of course, because we want to fight for the podium. But it is not a disaster either, considering that we struggled at the beginning. On the other hand, we are the best Ducati on the grid. It looks like Ducati is struggling a bit more compared to other manufacturers because it seems that they have improved this year and are a bit stronger. But this is something we are working hard on. I have the feeling that we are still missing something with the bike, for example in terms of suspension, a better feeling, but also a bit more power. These are a few points that we are working on. My team is also doing everything possible and hopefully we can improve soon. But that is the situation, and I think we are doing a good job with what we have. It was only the first day here and we struggled a bit, but the position is not a disaster for the first race of the weekend on Saturday.»
