Für Marcel Schrötter und sein Team «ERC Endurance #6» war das letzte Langstreckenrennen der Saison zwei Stunden vor dem Schwenken der Zielflagge vorbei.

Nach einer soliden und vielversprechenden Vorbereitung auf den «Bol d’Or», das zweite 24-Stunden-Rennen der diesjährigen FIM-Langstrecken-Weltmeisterschaft auf der Rennstrecke von Le Castellet in Südfrankreich, waren die Erwartungen von Marcel Schrötter und seinem BMW-Team aus Karlsruhe entsprechend hoch.

Das Hauptrennen, das am Samstagnachmittag um 15:00 Uhr startete, begann jedoch für das ehrgeizige Team bereits mit erheblichen Schwierigkeiten. Ein langwieriger Boxenstopp aufgrund eines plötzlichen technischen Problems kostete das Team viel Zeit. Nach der ersten Stunde lag die BMW M 1000 RR des Teams mit drei Runden Rückstand auf Platz 44.

Trotz weiterer Probleme im Verlauf des Rennens gelang es Marcel Schrötter und seinen Teamkollegen, seinem Landsmann Jan-Ole Jähnig und dem Franzosen Loris Baz, viel Boden gutzumachen und sich bis auf den sechsten Platz vorzuarbeiten, mit einem komfortablen Vorsprung auf die hinter ihnen liegenden Teams. Zwei Stunden vor Rennende musste das Team jedoch aufgrund eines nicht behebbaren Problems das Rennen aufgeben.

Das Ziel, die Meisterschaft unter den ersten fünf zu beenden, war damit zunichte gemacht. Am Ende lagen sie nur zwei Punkte hinter dem AutoRace Ube Racing Team, das den «Bol d’Or»“ nach 24 Stunden auf Platz 50 beendete.

Nach nur ein paar Tagen Pause wird der 33-jährige Schrötter an diesem Wochenende beim Saisonfinale der «EURO MOTO»-Superbike-Serie auf dem Hockenheimring an den Start gehen.

«Die vergangene Woche war für mich wieder einmal eine zermürbende Erfahrung. 24-Stunden-Rennen sind die härtesten Veranstaltungen, an denen ich bisher teilgenommen habe. Le Castellet war für mich dennoch ein einzigartiges Erlebnis. Leider hatten wir bereits in der ersten Stunde ein technisches Problem und fielen auf Platz 46 zurück. Nach der guten Vorbereitung hatten wir wirklich gute Chancen auf ein starkes Ergebnis. Doch nach diesem Zwischenfall kommt einem ein solches Rennen extrem lang vor, vor allem mental. Plötzlich wurde es zu einer echten Herausforderung, durchzuhalten und weiterzumachen. Das soll keine Beschwerde sein, denn schliesslich dürfen wir Rennfahrer etwas unglaublich Cooles erleben. Aber wir machen das auch, um erfolgreich zu sein. Dennoch war dieses 24-Stunden-Rennen zermürbend. Wir haben hart gekämpft und alles gegeben, während wir uns bis auf den sechsten Platz wieder nach vorne kämpften. Nach dem ersten Problem gab es weitere technische Schwierigkeiten, weshalb wir insgesamt nicht weniger als fünf außerplanmässige Boxenstopps einlegen mussten.»

«Trotzdem haben alle grossartige Arbeit geleistet. Jeder im Team, einschliesslich meiner Teamkollegen, hat bis zum Schluss wirklich alles gegeben. Dennoch war es wirklich schade, dass wir das Rennen nicht beenden konnten. Der Ausfall zwei Stunden vor der Zielflagge hat sehr, sehr wehgetan. Aber so ist das eben im Langstreckenrennsport. Für uns ging es, sozusagen, ausschließlich um den fünften Platz in der Meisterschaft. Wenn man bedenkt, dass das BMW-Werksteam vor einem Jahr nur eine halbe Stunde vor dem scheinbar sicheren Weltmeistertitel ausfiel, kann man sich vorstellen, wie gross die Enttäuschung ist. Trotzdem bin ich stolz auf unsere Leistung beim Bol d’Or und auch auf das, was wir über die gesamte Saison hinweg erreicht haben. Ein riesiges Dankeschön an das gesamte ERC-Endurance-Team für alles, was es in diesem Jahr geleistet hat. Ich habe in dieser Meisterschaft unglaublich viele wundervolle Erlebnisse gehabt. Jetzt brauche ich ein oder zwei Tage, um mich zu erholen, bevor ich mit Vollgas in das Saisonfinale der «EURO MOTO» starte. Abschliessend möchte ich dem BMW-Werksteam zum Titelgewinn gratulieren. Ich freue mich wirklich sehr für meine Markenkollegen.»

EN: Despite great efforts, EWC season’s finale ends in disappointment

For Marcel Schrötter and his «ERC Endurance #6» team, the season's final endurance race was over two hours before the checkered flag was waved.

After a solid and promising preparation for the «Bol d’Or», the second 24-hour race of this year’s FIM Endurance World Championship at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, southern France, expectations were correspondingly high for Marcel Schrötter and his BMW team from Karlsruhe.

The main race, which started at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, began with significant difficulties for the ambitious outfit, however. A long stop in the pit due to a sudden technical problem cost the team a lot of time. After the first hour, the team’s BMW M 1000 RR was in 44th place, three laps behind the leaders.

Despite further problems during the race, Marcel Schrötter and his teammates, his compatriot Jan-Ole Jähnig and Frenchman Loris Baz, managed to make up a lot of ground and work their way up to sixth place, with a comfortable gap over the teams behind them. However, two hours before the end of the race, the team was forced to retire due to irreparable problems to their bike.

That effectively dashed their goal of finishing the championship in the top five. In the end, they were just two points behind AutoRace Ube Racing Team, which finished the «Bol d’Or» in P50 after 24 hours.

After just a few days off, 33-year-old Schrötter will be competing this weekend in the last round of this year’s «EURO MOTO» Superbike Series at the Hockenheimring.

«Last week was yet another grueling experience for me. 24-hour races are the toughest events I’ve ever competed in. Still, Le Castellet was a unique experience for me. Unfortunately, we had a technical problem as early as in the first hour and that dropped us back to 46th place. After our solid preparation, we really had a good chance for a strong result. But after that incident, a race like this feels extremely long, especially mentally. Suddenly, it became a real challenge to hang in there and keep going. This isn’t meant to be a complaint, because after all, we racers get to experience something incredibly cool. But we also do this to be successful. Still, this 24-hour race was grueling. We fought hard and gave it our all as we battled our way back up to sixth place. After the initial issues, we encountered further technical difficulties, which is why we had to make no fewer than five unscheduled pit stops in total.»

«Still, everyone did a great job. Everyone in the team, including my teammates on the bike, really gave it their all right up until the end. Nevertheless, it was truly a shame that we couldn’t finish the race. The retirement two hours before the checkered flag really, really hurt. But that’s just how it is in endurance racing. For us, it was, so to speak, all about fifth place in the championship. When you consider that the BMW factory team retired just half an hour before what seemed like a certain world championship title a year ago, you can imagine how huge the disappointment is. Still, I’m proud of our performance at the Bol d’Or and also of what we’ve achieved throughout the entire season. A huge thank you to the entire ERC Endurance team for everything they’ve accomplished this year. I’ve had an incredible number of wonderful experiences in this championship. Now I need a day or two to recover before I go full throttle into the season finale of “EURO MOTO.” Finally, I’d like to congratulate the BMW factory team on winning the title. I’m truly very happy for my mates in BMW.»
