Marcel Schrötter hatte es am Sonntag im zweiten Rennen beim WM-Auftakt fast in der Hand, seinen ersten Sieg in der Supersport-Weltmeisterschaft zu holen.

Der zweite Renntag der neuen Saison auf der bezaubernden Insel Phillip Island wurde erneut von herrlichem Spätsommerwetter beherrscht. Zur Freude aller Fahrer waren die Temperaturen weniger heiss als am Samstagnachmittag.

Marcel Schrötter machte mit der Bestzeit im morgendlichen Warm Up deutlich, dass er das Ergebnis vom Samstag, wo er nach einer tollen Leistung als Dritter auf das Podium stürmte, verbessern will. Vom zweiten Startplatz aus spielte er von Anfang an eine wichtige Rolle in der Spitzengruppe. Eine Runde nach dem geplanten Boxenstopp zum Reifenwechsel übernahm er die Führung.

Leider konnte Schrötter dieses Glücksgefühl nicht lange auskosten. In Kurve zwölf in der elften Runde rutschte ihm das Hinterrad weg. Der ehrgeizige Rennfahrer hatte grosses Glück, dass ein nachfolgender Fahrer nur über seinen Fuss rollte und dabei keine Verletzungen davontrug.

Bis zur nächsten Veranstaltung der FIM Supersport World Championship sind es nun fünf Wochen Pause. Dann geht es zurück auf die Achterbahn von Portimao.

«Ich bin sehr enttäuscht. Nach dem starken ersten Rennen und einem noch besseren Warm Up heute Morgen als gestern, zeigt, dass wir über die Tage die richtigen Schritte gemacht haben. Mit einem Nuller abzureisen ist daher unglaublich schmerzhaft. Wieder einmal ein Rennen in Führung liegend wegzuwerfen, wie vor ein paar Jahren in Assen in der Moto2, lässt mich denken, dass ich kein Rennen gewinnen kann. Aber im Gegenteil, ich fühle mich sehr gut und war bis zum Sturz sehr entspannt und habe keine Fehler gemacht. Ich hatte alles unter Kontrolle. Auch zum Zeitpunkt des Malheurs habe ich nichts anders gemacht. Dieser Ausgang ist einfach sehr bitter, nicht nur für mich, sondern auch für meine Jungs in der Box. Es tut mir sehr leid für sie. Das Positive ist, dass wir gezeigt haben, dass wir ganz vorne hingehören, dass wir Rennen anführen können und dass mir mein Gefühl sagt, ein bisschen schneller zu sein als die anderen. Dennoch gibt es noch ein paar Punkte, die wir unbedingt verbessern müssen. Aber das Wichtigste ist, dass wir bei der Musik sind. Mit dieser Einstellung müssen wir nach Portimao gehen und dort genauso weitermachen. Die Saison hat gerade erst begonnen und dauert noch lange.»

EN: Unfortunate crash with victory in sight

ON Sunday in the second race at the series’ opening round in Australia, Marcel Schrötter almost had it in his hands to take his first victory in Supersport World Championship.

The second race day of the new season at magnificient Phillip Island was once again dominated by glorious late summer weather. To the delight of all the riders, the temperatures were less hot than on Saturday afternoon.

Marcel Schrötter made it clear with fastest lap time during this morning’s Warm Up that he wanted to improve on Saturday's result, where he stormed onto the podium in third place after a great performance. From second on the grid, he played an important role in the leading group right from the start. One lap after the scheduled pit stop to change tyres, he took the lead.

Unfortunately, Schrötter was not able to enjoy this feeling of happiness for long. In turn twelve on the eleventh lap, his rear wheel slipped off. The ambitious racer was very lucky that a following rider only rolled over his foot and did not sustain any injuries.

There is now a five-week break until the next FIM Supersport World Championship event. Then it's back to the rollercoaster of Portimao.

«I am very disappointed. After the strong first race and an even better warm-up this morning than yesterday, it shows that we have made the right steps over the days. To leave Phillip Island with a zero is therefore incredibly painful. To throw away another race while leading, like a few years ago in Assen in Moto2, makes me think that I cannot win a race. But on the contrary, I feel very good and until the crash I was very relaxed and did not make any mistakes either. I had everything under control. I did not do anything differently at the time of the mishap either. This outcome is just very bitter, not only for me, but also for my guys in the pits. I feel very sorry for them. The positive thing is that we have shown that we belong at the front, that we can lead races and that my feeling is that I am a bit faster than the others. Nevertheless, there are still a few points that we absolutely have to improve. But the most important thing is that we are with the music. We have to go to Portimao with this attitude and continue in the same way. The season has only just begun and there is still a long way to go.»
